When to worry about night sweats with HIV infection

Night sweats can accompany HIV infection, another infection, medicine effects, hormonal changes, or a warm sleeping environment. The symptom alone cannot show the cause or indicate how well treatment is working.

Describe whether the sweating is occasional or drenching, whether it wakes you, and whether you have fever, cough, diarrhoea, mouth changes, skin changes, or swollen glands. Mention missed doses, new medicines, and recent contact with someone who was unwell.

Keep taking antiretroviral treatment as prescribed and do not double doses after a missed dose unless your care team advises it. Arrange a review for a new pattern, repeated episodes, or sweats that affect sleep and daily activities.

Keep cool at night, replace damp clothing, and drink fluids if you are able. Write down temperatures and associated symptoms so your clinician can decide whether examination or tests are appropriate.

Seek urgent care for severe breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, fainting, inability to keep fluids down, or rapidly worsening weakness. Contact your HIV team promptly for persistent fever, a new cough, worsening diarrhoea, or signs of dehydration.

Ask whether any current medicine could contribute, which symptoms suggest an infection needing prompt assessment, and what to do if sweating occurs after a missed treatment dose.
