Short answer

Loss of appetite is a common presentation of Hepatitis A, but seek medical advice if it is worsening, prevents drinking, or occurs with signs of dehydration or severe liver illness.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Alcohol and unapproved medicines or supplements.

What loss of appetite can mean

Hepatitis A can cause nausea, tiredness, fever, abdominal discomfort and a reduced desire to eat. Food may seem unappealing while the liver is inflamed. Appetite often improves as the illness settles, but ongoing poor intake can leave you weak and make it harder to replace fluids.

The symptom alone does not identify the cause or show how severe the infection is. Note whether you can drink, pass urine normally and manage small portions. Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine and pale stools can occur with hepatitis A and should be discussed with a clinician.

What you can do today

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Try small portions of bland or familiar foods, such as soup, rice, toast or yoghurt, whenever you feel able. Rest, avoid alcohol, and do not start supplements or new medicines without checking that they are suitable for your liver.

Contact the clinician managing your hepatitis A if eating and drinking remain difficult, vomiting keeps returning, or your energy is falling. Keep a brief record of fluids, urine, vomiting and changes in jaundice so you can describe the pattern clearly.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt medical assessment if you cannot keep fluids down, are passing very little urine, feel faint when standing, or become unusually sleepy or confused. Seek urgent help for severe or increasing abdominal pain, vomiting blood, black stools, or bleeding that does not stop.

Contact a healthcare professional promptly if jaundice is becoming more noticeable, you develop persistent vomiting, or your appetite does not begin to return as the other symptoms improve. A clinician can assess hydration and liver-related warning signs.

Questions for your doctor

Could my current appetite and fluid intake be causing dehydration? Which medicines, foods or supplements should I avoid while my liver is recovering? What changes in jaundice, urine or alertness should prompt urgent review?
