When to worry about a hoarse voice with lung cancer

The voice box depends on nerves and nearby tissues that can be affected by a chest tumour, enlarged lymph nodes, inflammation, treatment, or another condition. Hoarseness may sound rough or breathy and can make speaking tiring. It does not by itself show how advanced a cancer is, but a new change is useful information for the team managing you.

Tell your oncology or respiratory team when the change began and whether it is constant or comes and goes. Note cough, chest discomfort, breathlessness, swallowing trouble, fever, or coughing blood. Keep hydrated, avoid smoke, and use your voice gently. Continue prescribed treatment unless your clinician tells you otherwise.

Contact your cancer team promptly about persistent or worsening hoarseness, new swallowing difficulty, a neck or chest swelling, coughing blood, or increasing breathlessness. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, confusion, sudden chest pain, or inability to swallow saliva.

Ask whether the voice change could relate to the cancer, treatment, reflux, infection, or vocal-cord irritation, and whether you need an examination of the voice box or chest imaging. Ask which symptoms should trigger an urgent call and who to contact outside clinic hours.
