When to worry about cough with pneumonia

Cough is a very common presentation of Pneumonia. Infection and inflammation in the lung can produce a dry cough or mucus, with fever, chest discomfort, and breathlessness also possible. The sound or amount of mucus does not reliably show severity; breathing and general condition are more useful warning signs.

Follow the treatment plan given by your clinician and complete prescribed antibiotics unless they advise otherwise. Rest, take fluids in manageable amounts, and avoid smoke. Keep track of breathing, alertness, and ability to drink. Arrange follow-up if improvement is not beginning or symptoms interfere with basic activities.

Contact a clinician promptly if cough or fever is worsening, breathing becomes harder, you feel faint, or you are passing much less urine. Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, persistent chest pain, blue or grey lips, new confusion, difficulty waking, or coughing blood.

Ask what improvement should look like, whether your medicines need adjustment, how to protect others from infection, and which symptoms require immediate reassessment.
