When should you worry about blurred vision if you have type 2 diabetes?

A rapid change in blood glucose can temporarily alter the shape of the eye’s lens and make vision hazy. Diabetes can also damage small blood vessels in the retina, sometimes before noticeable symptoms develop. These causes need different care, so do not assume that every episode is a glucose fluctuation. A new blind spot, missing area, flashes, or a curtain-like shadow may indicate a retinal problem.

Check your glucose if you have been taught how and follow your personal diabetes plan. Avoid driving until vision is clear. Record the reading, timing, food or medicine changes, and whether one or both eyes are affected. Arrange a prompt diabetes or eye review if blurring persists, returns repeatedly, or occurs despite readings in your usual range. Keep scheduled retinal screening appointments even when vision seems normal.

Seek emergency care for sudden vision loss, a curtain or shadow, new flashes with many floaters, severe eye pain, or blurred vision with weakness, numbness, confusion, or speech trouble. Get urgent diabetes advice for very high or low glucose with vomiting, drowsiness, shaking, sweating, or difficulty staying awake. Do not delay care while trying repeated home checks.
