When to worry about bedwetting with threadworms

Threadworms commonly cause itching around the anus at night, disturbed sleep, and irritability. Scratching can spread eggs to fingers, bedding, clothing, and household surfaces. Sleep disruption or irritation near the urinary area may coincide with wetting, but bedwetting can also arise from constipation, a urinary infection, stress, or changes in routine. Looking for the whole pattern helps a clinician decide what to check.

Speak with a pharmacist or clinician about suitable threadworm treatment for the household, including age and pregnancy considerations. Wash hands after toileting and before eating, keep nails short, shower or wash the area in the morning, and launder sleepwear and bedding regularly. Avoid blaming the child and do not give medicine intended for another person.

Arrange assessment if itching or wetting does not settle after the recommended treatment plan, if symptoms keep returning, or if there is pain when passing urine, daytime accidents, fever, blood in urine, persistent abdominal pain, or reduced energy. Seek urgent care for severe pain, repeated vomiting, marked drowsiness, or difficulty passing urine.
