When to Worry About Ankle Pain With an Ankle Fracture

Short answer
Ankle Pain is a common presentation of Ankle Fracture, but worsening pain, numbness, pale or blue toes, increasing swelling, or a new inability to move the toes needs prompt medical review.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the pain may mean
A fracture can cause pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty putting weight through the foot. Pain may remain while the bone and surrounding tissues recover, but it should be monitored against the plan given by your treating team. Pain that rises sharply inside a cast or boot, pressure from a changed fit, or new tingling can indicate that swelling or positioning is affecting circulation or nerves.
What to do now
Follow your weight-bearing and movement instructions, keep the ankle protected, and elevate the leg when swelling is troublesome. Use walking aids as shown rather than testing the ankle by walking without support. Keep a cast or dressing dry and do not place objects inside it. Take only pain relief that is suitable for you and use it according to the label or your clinician’s advice.
When to seek care
Contact the fracture team promptly for pain that is worsening instead of gradually easing, a loose, tight, wet, cracked, or damaged cast, new rubbing, or difficulty following the prescribed boot or weight-bearing plan. Go to urgent care for severe unrelenting pain, numbness, cold or discoloured toes, rapidly increasing swelling, an open wound, fever with wound drainage, chest pain, or sudden breathlessness.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how much weight you may place on the foot, how to check circulation and sensation, and when your next examination or imaging is planned. Clarify which pain changes are expected, how to adjust elevation, and who to contact if the cast or boot becomes uncomfortable.
