When should you see a doctor about testicular pain?

Pain may arise from the testicle, epididymis, groin or nearby tissues. Infection, including chlamydia, gonorrhoea or mumps, can cause pain and swelling. An inguinal hernia may produce groin discomfort that extends into the scrotum. The pattern, onset and examination findings matter, and pain intensity alone cannot establish the cause.

For mild pain without warning signs, avoid strenuous activity and wear supportive underwear while arranging a medical review. Do not delay assessment to monitor sudden pain at home. Tell the clinician about injury, urinary symptoms, discharge, fever, sexual exposure and whether the pain began abruptly or gradually.

Go to an emergency department immediately for sudden one-sided pain, rapid swelling, nausea or vomiting, a testicle that sits higher or at an unusual angle, severe tenderness, or pain after an injury. Urgent care is also needed with fever, redness, or inability to pass urine.

Ask whether the pain pattern suggests infection, hernia or another urgent problem, whether urine or sexual-health tests are needed, and what symptoms should prompt a return visit. Ask how to support the scrotum and manage discomfort safely.
