Short answer

See a doctor if your periods stop unexpectedly, pregnancy is possible, or stopped periods occur with pain, unusual discharge, headaches, vision changes, or other new symptoms.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What stopped periods can mean

A missed period may follow pregnancy, breastfeeding, major stress, changes in weight or exercise, hormonal contraception, or a medical condition. The pattern matters: tell the clinician when your last period began, whether cycles were previously regular, and whether the change followed a procedure or medication.

Possible explanations include polycystic ovary syndrome, thyroid or pituitary hormone problems, and menopause-related change. Less common causes include Asherman Syndrome, Turner Syndrome, Hypothalamic Amenorrhoea, or an Imperforate Hymen. Stopped periods are a presentation of these conditions, not proof that you have one.

What to do before an appointment

If pregnancy is possible, take a home pregnancy test and share the result. Record bleeding dates, contraception, medicines, recent illness, eating or exercise changes, stress, and symptoms such as pelvic pain, nipple discharge, acne, or increased hair growth. Do not start hormones or supplements to trigger bleeding without medical advice.

When care is urgent

Seek urgent care for severe or one-sided pelvic pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, heavy bleeding, fever, or a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding. Arrange a routine appointment for repeated missed periods, or sooner if you have headaches, vision changes, milky nipple discharge, or symptoms of menopause affecting daily life.

Questions to ask

Ask which causes fit your history, whether pregnancy and hormone tests are needed, whether an examination or ultrasound would help, and when you should follow up if bleeding does not return.
