When should you see a doctor about neck pain?

Short answer
See a doctor about neck pain when it persists, keeps returning, limits movement, follows an injury, or travels into an arm with numbness or weakness.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the pattern may show
Neck pain can arise from muscles, joints, discs, or irritated nerves. Cervical radiculopathy may send pain, tingling, or weakness into an arm. Cervical spondylosis, muscle strain, myofascial pain syndrome, and prolonged screen posture can produce different combinations of stiffness and pain. The symptom alone cannot tell which condition is present.
Assessment usually includes questions about onset, injury, work and sleep positions, followed by checks of neck movement, arm strength, sensation, and reflexes. Imaging is considered when the examination or history makes it useful.
Steps while arranging care
Keep a brief record of triggers, duration, arm symptoms, headaches, and activities that relieve or aggravate the pain. Change position often, support the screen at a comfortable height, and use gentle movement rather than forceful stretching. Avoid driving or lifting if turning your neck is unsafe. Do not ignore progressive arm weakness.
Urgent warning signs
Seek emergency care after a major impact or fall, or for neck pain with weakness in an arm or leg, difficulty walking, loss of coordination, severe headache, fever, confusion, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Chest pain, shortness of breath, or pain spreading to the jaw also needs emergency help.
Useful questions
Ask what structure may be involved, whether nerve irritation is suspected, which movements are safe, whether physiotherapy could help, and what change should prompt urgent review.

Questions people ask
Can poor screen posture cause neck pain?
It can increase strain and stiffness, but persistent or radiating symptoms deserve an assessment for other causes.
Should I stretch a painful neck?
Gentle movement may be reasonable, but stop forceful stretching if it increases arm pain, tingling, or weakness.
