When should you see a doctor about muscle cramps?

Short answer
See a doctor about muscle cramps when they are frequent, severe, prolonged, spreading, or interfering with sleep, walking, work, or daily activities.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What can trigger cramps
A cramp is a sudden, involuntary tightening of a muscle. Exercise, heat, prolonged sitting, dehydration, and some medicines can contribute. Muscle strain, heat cramps, hypothyroidism, peripheral arterial disease, sarcopenia, or chronic kidney disease may be considered when cramps are recurrent or occur with other changes. Cramps alone do not prove a particular cause.
Relief and useful observations
Stop the activity, gently stretch and massage the affected muscle, and allow it to relax. After exercise or heat exposure, cool down and drink normally. Note the muscle involved, timing, triggers, duration, and medicines. Do not start electrolyte products or stop prescribed treatment without advice, particularly if you have kidney disease.
When to seek urgent help
Get urgent care for a cramp with severe swelling, a cold or pale limb, new weakness, numbness, chest pain, fainting, confusion, or inability to move. After heat exposure, urgent help is needed if symptoms continue with confusion, collapse, or inability to drink.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your medicines, circulation, thyroid, kidney function, hydration, or activity pattern could be involved; whether blood tests are useful; and what prevention plan is safe for you.
