When is palliative care recommended for lung cancer?

A palliative care team can help assess breathlessness, cough, chest discomfort, pain, fatigue, appetite changes, sleep problems and anxiety. It may coordinate medicines, oxygen or other symptom measures with the oncology and respiratory teams, while also supporting communication, family needs and practical planning.

This care can accompany surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted treatment or immunotherapy. A referral is based on what you need, not on stopping cancer treatment. Support may be especially useful when symptoms change quickly, treatment decisions feel difficult or home care needs are increasing.

Describe breathlessness by what it stops you doing, such as washing, walking, speaking or sleeping. Record cough, pain, oxygen use, medicines and triggers. Tell the team about appetite, weight changes, fatigue, fear or difficulty managing at home, because these details guide a broader plan.

Ask for a palliative care referral during an oncology visit. Discuss breathing techniques, safe activity, medicine side effects, equipment and caregiver support. Do not alter oxygen settings or prescribed medicines without clinical advice.

Call emergency services for sudden severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, fainting, new confusion or inability to speak because of breathing difficulty. Seek prompt oncology advice for coughing blood, a new fever, rapidly worsening cough, increasing oxygen need or pain that is not controlled.
