Short answer

A hormonal coil may be recommended for endometrial hyperplasia when progestogen treatment is suitable and preserving the womb is part of the plan.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What this treatment means

Endometrial hyperplasia is an over-thickened lining of the womb. A hormonal coil, also called an intrauterine system, sits inside the womb and releases progestogen. This hormone can act on the lining and encourage it to become thinner. It is different from a copper coil, which does not release progestogen. A biopsy or other assessment may be needed to identify the type of hyperplasia and check for abnormal cells before treatment is chosen.

What to do next

Discuss the biopsy result, the presence or absence of atypical cells, future pregnancy plans, and whether the device can be fitted safely. Follow-up usually includes repeat sampling or review at an interval chosen by the gynaecology team. Tell the clinician about unexplained bleeding, pelvic infection, pregnancy, or problems affecting the womb, because these may change the plan. When to seek care

Seek prompt medical advice for very heavy bleeding, dizziness, worsening pelvic pain, fever, or unusual discharge after fitting. Contact the care team if you cannot feel the threads, feel hard plastic at the cervix, or think the coil may have moved. New or continuing bleeding during follow-up should be reported so the lining can be reassessed.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which type of hyperplasia was found, why a hormonal coil fits your situation, how fitting will be managed, when the lining will be checked again, and what symptoms should trigger an earlier review.

Questions people ask

Is a hormonal coil the same as a copper coil?

No. A hormonal coil releases progestogen, while a copper coil does not.

Will follow-up still be needed?

Yes. The womb lining may need repeat sampling or clinical review to see how it responds.
