When is diagnostic hysteroscopy recommended for endometrial polyps?

An endometrial polyp is a growth from the lining of the uterus. It can be linked with bleeding between periods, heavier bleeding or bleeding after menopause, although some polyps cause no symptoms. Ultrasound can suggest a polyp, but hysteroscopy lets the clinician look inside the uterine cavity through the cervix.

The procedure may be considered when bleeding persists, an ultrasound finding is uncertain, a polyp is in a difficult position, or a tissue sample has not explained the bleeding. During the same visit, the team may discuss whether removal and laboratory examination are appropriate.

Tell the clinic about pregnancy possibility, recent bleeding, allergies, medicines and previous pelvic procedures. Ask whether you need a pregnancy test, pain relief, sedation or someone to accompany you. Bring details of your bleeding pattern and any scan or biopsy reports.

Afterwards, mild cramping or light bleeding can occur. Follow the discharge advice and ask when to resume sex, tampons or strenuous activity. Keep the review appointment so findings and any tissue result are explained.

Seek prompt medical advice for heavy bleeding, fever, worsening abdominal or pelvic pain, faintness or a bad-smelling discharge after hysteroscopy. Bleeding after menopause should be assessed even if a polyp has already been seen, because the clinician may need to examine the whole lining.
