When is chemotherapy recommended for throat cancer?

Throat cancer can arise in different parts of the pharynx or nearby tissues, so the team considers the exact site, tumour size, lymph nodes, scan findings and overall health. Chemotherapy given with radiotherapy can make cancer cells more sensitive to radiation and may help preserve function in some treatment plans. It may also be used before or after surgery for selected tumours. If the cancer cannot be removed, returns, or spreads elsewhere, medicines may aim to slow growth and relieve problems such as pain or difficulty swallowing. The plan may include other systemic medicines depending on tumour features.

Ask whether the goal is cure, reducing the chance of return, preserving an organ, or controlling symptoms. Discuss dental review, swallowing and nutrition support, voice care, blood-test monitoring, hydration, and management of nausea, mouth soreness or fatigue. Tell the team about smoking, alcohol use, hearing or kidney problems, and all medicines and supplements.

Contact the treatment team promptly for fever, breathing difficulty, chest pain, uncontrolled vomiting, severe diarrhoea, confusion, or bleeding. Seek urgent help for inability to swallow fluids, choking, rapidly worsening neck swelling, or signs of dehydration.
