When is cervical fusion recommended for cervical spondylosis?

Cervical spondylosis describes age-related wear in the discs and joints of the neck. Imaging may show narrowing even when it is not causing symptoms, so the scan must be considered alongside your examination and daily limitations. Surgery is more likely to enter the discussion when a disc or bone spur presses on a nerve or the spinal cord, when weakness or coordination problems are present, or when instability and severe pain persist despite suitable non-surgical treatment.

Arrange a clinical review if neck pain is accompanied by arm numbness, weakness, clumsy hands, or balance changes. Bring previous scans and explain what activities have become difficult. Depending on the findings, care may include exercise-based physiotherapy, medication guidance, or other targeted treatment. If surgery is proposed, ask whether decompression alone is enough or whether fusion is needed to preserve alignment and stability.

Get urgent assessment for new or worsening limb weakness, difficulty walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, or neurological symptoms after a significant neck injury. A hot, swollen neck with fever also needs prompt medical attention. These signs may have causes that require immediate evaluation and should not be attributed to ordinary wear without an examination.

Ask what the scan shows, which symptoms are explained by the findings, and what improvement is expected from non-surgical care. If fusion is advised, discuss the levels involved, alternatives, recovery, activity restrictions, and how changes in strength or coordination will be monitored.
