Short answer

Wheezing for months should be assessed by a clinician because persistent airway narrowing or irritation needs an identified cause and plan.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why wheezing may persist

Ongoing wheeze can reflect asthma, chronic airway irritation, allergic rhinitis with post-nasal drainage, or another lung problem. COPD can cause persistent airflow limitation, particularly in people with a history of smoking. Acute bronchitis may leave cough and noisy breathing for a while, but continuing symptoms still deserve review. Bronchiolitis is more relevant to infants and young children.

Notice whether the sound is present at rest, after activity, at night, or around dust, pets, mould, cold air, or smoke. Tell the clinician about cough, phlegm, chest tightness, fever, breathlessness, reflux, medicines, and past lung conditions. These details help distinguish airway narrowing from sounds arising higher in the throat.

Arrange a proper review

Book an appointment rather than treating months of wheeze as a temporary irritation. A clinician may examine your chest, review medicines and exposures, and arrange breathing tests or other checks when appropriate. Avoid cigarette smoke, vaping aerosols, and known irritants. Keep a simple symptom diary and bring every inhaler or medicine you use.

Use prescribed inhalers according to their instructions. Do not start antibiotics, steroids, or someone else’s inhaler without medical advice; the right treatment depends on the cause.

Warning signs that cannot wait

Get emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, faintness, confusion, inability to speak comfortably, chest pain, or sudden swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat. Seek same-day medical advice when breathlessness is worsening, you cough blood, develop a high fever with breathing trouble, or your reliever inhaler is not giving the expected relief.

Questions to take along

Ask what causes are being considered, whether you need lung-function testing, how to use each inhaler, which exposures to avoid, and what change should prompt urgent help.

Questions people ask

Is wheezing for months normal after a cold?

A cough may linger after an infection, but wheezing lasting months should be reviewed so persistent airway problems are not missed.

Can persistent wheezing be treated?

Treatment depends on the cause and may include reducing irritants, inhaled medicines, or care for an underlying condition.
