What should you know about wheezing after covid?

Wheezing is a musical or whistling sound made when air moves through narrowed airways. After a respiratory infection, airway irritation and mucus can linger. A post-infection cough may occur alongside it, but wheezing can also be associated with asthma, allergic rhinitis, acute bronchitis or another airway problem. The symptom alone cannot identify the cause.

Rest, drink fluids if you can, avoid smoke and other known irritants, and follow any inhaler plan already prescribed for you. Do not borrow another person’s inhaler. A clinician can listen to your chest and decide whether further checks or treatment are needed. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, chest pain, inability to speak comfortably, or rapidly worsening wheeze. Prompt medical review is also sensible when fever returns, breathing becomes harder, or symptoms keep disrupting sleep or normal activity.
