Short answer

Rotavirus infection in infants can cause vomiting and watery diarrhoea, so preventing dehydration is the main priority.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What rotavirus means

Rotavirus is a contagious infection of the digestive system. An infant may develop repeated watery stools, vomiting, tummy discomfort, fever, poor appetite, or tiredness. The illness can spread easily through contaminated hands and surfaces, especially after nappy changes. The key concern is loss of fluid and salts, which can progress quickly in a small baby.

What you can do

Continue breastfeeding or usual milk feeds, offering smaller amounts more frequently if vomiting occurs. A clinician or pharmacist may recommend an oral rehydration solution; prepare and use it exactly as directed. Do not dilute formula or give sugary drinks. Wash hands with soap after every nappy change, clean changing areas, and avoid sharing towels. Keep a record of feeds, vomits, stools, and wet nappies.

When to seek medical care

Get urgent help if the infant is difficult to wake, has a dry mouth, no tears, sunken eyes or soft spot, cold or mottled skin, blood in the stool, green vomit, or breathing changes. Contact a clinician promptly when vomiting prevents fluids staying down, diarrhoea is frequent, wet nappies decrease, or the baby is becoming unusually sleepy. Young infants need a lower threshold for assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask how much fluid to offer, which rehydration product is appropriate, how to judge wet nappies, and whether vaccination advice applies to your infant. Check when persistent vomiting or diarrhoea requires review.

Questions people ask

Should breastfeeding continue during rotavirus infection?

Usually yes. Continue breastfeeds and ask a clinician how to adjust the pattern if vomiting or diarrhoea makes feeding difficult.

Can rotavirus spread at home?

Yes. Careful handwashing after nappy changes, cleaning shared surfaces, and separate towels reduce spread but cannot remove it completely.
