What to know about mammograms in women

Mammography uses low-dose X-rays to produce pictures of breast tissue. The breast is placed on an imaging platform and compressed briefly so the tissue can be seen clearly. The images are reviewed for findings that may need comparison, further imaging, or clinical follow-up. A request for more tests does not by itself establish a diagnosis; it means the finding needs clarification.

Wear a top that is easy to remove and avoid deodorant, powder, or lotion on the breasts and underarms on the appointment day. Tell the imaging team about pregnancy, breast implants, prior surgery, and any earlier mammograms so they can plan the examination. Describe any lump, discharge, pain, or skin change before images are taken. Keep the appointment details and ask how results will be communicated.

Book a clinical assessment for a new lump, persistent focal pain, bloody or spontaneous nipple discharge, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or a change in breast size or contour. Do not wait for a routine screening appointment if a change is progressing. Fever with a hot, red, swollen breast, rapidly increasing swelling, or marked illness needs prompt medical care.
