What to expect from transvaginal ultrasound for ovarian cysts

The scan can show whether a cyst is on the right or left ovary and whether it looks fluid-filled, solid, or mixed. The report may describe its edges, internal features, and blood flow, as well as the womb and surrounding pelvis. An ultrasound appearance cannot always identify the cause by itself, so age, symptoms, menstrual pattern, and follow-up imaging may influence the plan.

Ask the imaging centre whether your bladder should be full or empty. During the examination, you lie on your back while a covered probe is inserted gently into the vagina. Pressure may be uncomfortable, especially with pelvic tenderness; tell the sonographer and request a pause if needed. After the scan, ask when the report will be reviewed and keep a copy if offered.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe pelvic pain, pain with vomiting, fainting, marked weakness, fever, or heavy bleeding. A cyst can sometimes twist the ovary or rupture, and these symptoms need prompt assessment. A scan appointment should not delay emergency care when pain begins suddenly or becomes intense.
