What to expect from transvaginal ultrasound for miscarriage

A covered, slender probe provides a close view of the womb lining, cervix, ovaries, and pregnancy. The clinician may look for a pregnancy, a heartbeat when it should be visible, or tissue remaining in the womb. Very early pregnancy dates can make findings uncertain, so symptoms, pregnancy hormone blood tests, and a repeat scan may be used before confirming what has happened.

You usually undress from the waist down and lie on an examination bed. The probe is inserted gently into the vagina; pressure or cramping is possible, and you can ask the operator to pause. Afterward, light spotting or mild cramps may occur, particularly if bleeding was already present. Follow the care plan and record worsening pain, bleeding, fever, or unusual discharge.

Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fainting, severe dizziness, fever, or feeling acutely unwell. These symptoms may indicate significant blood loss, infection, or another pregnancy emergency. Contact your maternity or gynaecology team if bleeding or pain is increasing rather than settling.

Ask what the scan showed, whether pregnancy tissue remains, and whether a repeat scan or blood test is needed. Ask about expected bleeding, pain relief, follow-up, and which symptoms require immediate assessment. You can also ask for emotional support after pregnancy loss.
