Keratosis pilaris forms when keratin and dead skin cells collect around hair follicles, creating small rough bumps. A retinoid changes how skin cells mature and shed, which may reduce follicle plugging and improve texture. It does not remove the underlying tendency, so maintenance may be needed. Redness, stinging, peeling, or tightness can appear after starting, especially on sensitive skin.

Apply a thin layer to clean, completely dry skin as directed. Starting on fewer evenings and increasing only as tolerated can help your skin adjust. Use a bland moisturiser and avoid scrubs, picking, and other irritating products on the same area unless your clinician approves them. Protect exposed skin from sunlight, since irritation can make discoloration more noticeable. Do not apply to cracked or inflamed skin, and follow the product instructions about pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Contact your clinician if swelling, blistering, severe burning, or a spreading rash develops, or if irritation does not settle after you pause and seek advice. Arrange a review if the bumps are painful, draining, rapidly changing, or unlike your usual keratosis pilaris; another follicle condition may need different care.
