What to expect from topical retinoids for comedonal acne

Comedones form when oil and shed cells block a pore. A topical retinoid helps the pore shed cells more normally, so existing plugs can loosen and new ones may form less readily. Blackheads may remain visible for a while because their colour comes from contact with air, not dirt. Whiteheads can also take time to flatten. Picking or squeezing can injure the pore and leave a mark, even when the original spot is small.

Spread a thin layer over the acne-prone area rather than applying a thick dab to each comedone. Follow the schedule prescribed, apply to dry skin, and use a gentle cleanser and moisturiser. Avoid scrubs, pore strips, and stacking several exfoliating products unless a clinician has planned the combination. Wear sunscreen on exposed areas, especially if your skin becomes irritated or marks easily. Ask before use if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
