What to expect from STI screening for genital herpes

Short answer

Expect questions about symptoms and sexual contact, followed by a sore swab when lesions are present; blood testing is used selectively.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Best sample
A fresh sore swab when a lesion is present
Blood testing
Used selectively to look for antibodies
During symptoms
Arrange assessment while a sore is visible

How the test is chosen

A clinician may inspect blisters, ulcers, or irritated skin and gently collect fluid or cells from a fresh sore. This sample can identify herpes simplex virus from the affected area. Testing is more informative while a lesion is visible, so contact a clinic promptly if a new sore appears.

A blood test looks for antibodies made after infection. It cannot show exactly when infection occurred or identify the site of infection, and it may not be useful for every person without symptoms. A positive result should be discussed with a clinician in context.

Before and after screening

Tell the clinician about genital, anal, or oral sores, their first appearance, and any recent sexual contact. Mention pregnancy, immune conditions, and medicines. Avoid sexual contact when sores or warning tingling are present, and use barriers while discussing risk and results with partners.

Ask how and when results will be shared. A negative swab does not always exclude infection if the sore is healing or the sample is limited. Do not use another person’s treatment; prescribed antiviral medicine works best when started according to clinical advice.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt medical assessment for painful genital sores, burning when passing urine, or a new rash after sexual contact. Seek urgent help for inability to pass urine, severe illness, eye pain or redness, confusion, or a severe headache. Pregnant people with new sores should contact their maternity or medical team promptly.

Questions for your doctor

Which sample is appropriate for me, and is a lesion available to swab? What can this result tell me about infection and what can it not tell me? When should I avoid sex, and how should I tell a partner?

Questions people ask

Can genital herpes be screened without sores?

A clinician may discuss a blood test, but it is not suitable for every person and needs careful interpretation.

Does a negative swab rule out herpes?

Not always; timing, healing, and the sample can affect the result, so discuss ongoing symptoms with the clinician.
