What to expect from splinting for trigger finger

Short answer
Splinting for trigger finger limits bending of the affected finger, which may reduce catching and allow the irritated tendon area to settle.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Purpose
- Reduce repeated tendon catching by limiting flexion
- Comfort check
- No numbness, colour change, or pressure injury
How the splint works
Trigger finger occurs when a tendon does not glide smoothly through its pulley near the base of the finger or thumb. A splint may hold the finger straighter during sleep or selected activities, reducing repeated catching and forceful gripping. You may notice stiffness when the support is removed. A splint is one treatment option and may not be suitable when the finger is locked or another cause of restricted movement is present.
Practical use
Wear the splint according to the schedule you were given and keep it snug without pinching. Avoid repeated forceful gripping and movements that provoke locking while symptoms are active. Move the other fingers, and move the affected finger only as advised. Keep the skin dry, inspect pressure points, and have the support adjusted if it slips or makes the finger more painful.
When to seek care
Contact a clinician if catching becomes more frequent, the finger locks, pain or swelling increases, or the splint causes numbness, colour change, blistering, or skin breakdown. Get prompt assessment if the finger suddenly becomes cold, blue, severely swollen, or impossible to move after an injury.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether night-time or daytime splinting is intended, which movements to practise, how long to try the support, and what options are available if catching continues.
