Scalp ringworm, or tinea capitis, affects the scalp and hair shafts. Cream alone may not reach the infection adequately, so a clinician commonly uses an oral antifungal and may add a medicated shampoo to reduce spread from loose scale and spores. Itching, tenderness, scaling, or broken hairs may ease gradually. Hair that has already broken or shed needs time to regrow, and a smooth or inflamed patch can look unchanged before the scalp settles.

Give the medicine on the schedule provided and use the prescribed shampoo as directed; shampoo supports hygiene but does not replace the oral treatment. Do not share combs, brushes, hats, pillows, towels, or hair accessories. Wash or clean personal hair items according to clinical advice, and arrange assessment for close household contacts or pets when exposure is possible. Avoid scratching and do not apply steroid products to the scalp unless prescribed. Keep follow-up appointments so the clinician can assess inflammation and hair recovery.

Seek prompt medical advice for a painful boggy swelling, pus, marked tenderness, fever, rapidly expanding hair loss, or swollen neck glands. Contact the prescriber for yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, severe abdominal symptoms, widespread rash, or facial swelling. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips or tongue. Earlier treatment matters when inflammation is strong because scarring hair loss can occur.
