What to expect from an MRI scan for a brain tumour

MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the brain without x-rays. It can show the position, size, and appearance of an abnormal area and how it relates to nearby structures. A contrast injection may make some findings easier to distinguish.

During the scan, a technologist can speak with you through an intercom. The machine makes repeated tapping or knocking sounds, and staying still helps prevent blurred images. The radiologist reviews the images and sends a report to the clinician managing your care.

Tell the imaging team about implants, metal fragments, a pacemaker, kidney problems, allergies, pregnancy, or anxiety in enclosed spaces. Remove metal items and follow any food, drink, or medicine instructions you receive. Wear comfortable clothing without metal fasteners if advised.

You may be given ear protection and an alarm button. If contrast is planned, the team explains the injection and checks relevant medical details. Practise slow breathing and tell the technologist if you feel distressed; options may be available to help you complete the scan.

Seek prompt medical advice for a rash, facial swelling, wheezing, or worsening dizziness after contrast. Contact your care team urgently for a severe new headache, seizure, sudden weakness, new speech difficulty, confusion, or repeated vomiting.
