What to expect from a hormonal coil for polycystic ovary syndrome

Polycystic ovary syndrome can cause irregular or absent periods. A hormonal coil releases progestogen in the uterus, which commonly makes bleeding lighter and may eventually make periods very light or absent. It does not reliably regulate ovulation, improve facial hair or acne, or remove the underlying hormone pattern.

Insertion is performed through the vagina and cervix. Cramping and spotting can occur afterwards, and irregular bleeding is common while the body adjusts. The coil does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

Tell the clinician about your bleeding pattern, pregnancy possibility, pelvic infections, medicines and any previous difficult insertion. Discuss whether you need another method temporarily and how PCOS symptoms will be managed separately. Keep the follow-up appointment or contact the clinic if bleeding remains troublesome. Check the threads only if you have been shown how; do not pull them.

Seek urgent medical advice for severe or worsening lower abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, faintness, fever, or unusual-smelling discharge after insertion. Contact the clinic if you cannot feel the threads, feel hard plastic at the cervix, or think the coil has moved. A missed period with pain needs prompt assessment because pregnancy, including pregnancy outside the womb, must be considered.
