What stops period cramps?

Short answer
Period cramps may ease with heat, suitable anti-inflammatory medicine, movement, or hormonal treatment recommended for you.

What causes the pain
Cramps happen when the womb contracts during menstruation. Pain can be linked to the period itself, but severe, new, worsening, or persistent pain may occur with Endometriosis, Adenomyosis, Uterine Fibroids, an Ovarian Endometrioma, or Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. Painful Periods can also affect the lower back, thighs, bowel, or bladder and may come with nausea or fatigue.
Relief you can try
Place a heat pad or hot-water bottle on the lower abdomen, protect your skin, and try gentle walking or stretching. An anti-inflammatory pain medicine may help when taken according to its label and only if it is safe for you; check first if you have stomach, kidney, bleeding, or asthma problems, or take other medicines. A clinician may discuss the Combined Pill or Hormonal Coil when cramps recur or bleeding is also troublesome.
When pain needs medical review
Get urgent help for sudden severe pelvic pain, faintness, fever with pelvic pain, vomiting that prevents fluids, or possible pregnancy. Arrange a medical appointment if pain is stopping normal activities, begins after years of comfortable periods, occurs between periods or during sex, or does not respond to your usual measures.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your pain pattern suggests an underlying pelvic condition, which pain medicine is safe with your health history, and whether hormonal options could help. Ask whether you need an examination, pregnancy test, infection testing, or imaging.
