Short answer

Oxytocin is used to start or strengthen labour contractions and to help the uterus contract after birth.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How oxytocin works

Oxytocin is a hormone naturally involved in uterine contractions. In hospital care, it may be given through a drip when labour needs to be induced or when contractions are not strong or regular enough. The dose is adjusted gradually according to contractions and the baby's wellbeing.

After delivery, oxytocin can help the uterus tighten. This supports the normal process that reduces bleeding from the area where the placenta was attached. It may also be used during a caesarean section, depending on the circumstances.

What happens during treatment

Oxytocin is given under maternity-team supervision, with monitoring of contractions and the baby's heart rate. Tell the team about previous caesarean birth, uterine surgery, allergies, and any concerns about the proposed method of birth. The infusion may be slowed or stopped if contractions become too frequent or monitoring changes.

You can ask what the medicine is intended to achieve, how it will be adjusted, and which pain-relief choices remain available. Do not change the infusion yourself.

When to seek care

During a monitored infusion, tell the maternity team immediately about severe constant abdominal pain, sudden breathlessness, chest pain, faintness, heavy vaginal bleeding, or a major change in fetal movement. After birth, urgent assessment is needed for heavy bleeding, large clots, worsening dizziness, or feeling faint.

Questions for your doctor

Why are you recommending oxytocin for me? How will you monitor contractions and the baby's heart rate? What would make you reduce or stop the infusion, and what alternatives are available if labour does not progress?
