What Is a Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Done With?

The sonographer places gel on the skin and moves a small probe over the area being assessed. Sound waves reflect differently from tendons, muscles, fluid, and other structures; the machine converts those echoes into moving images. The examiner may ask you to move a joint or tighten a muscle so structures can be viewed during motion. Doppler settings can show blood flow in selected situations.

Point-of-care ultrasound can be performed close to the consultation or treatment area, making it useful for a focused question. It does not use ionising radiation, although it cannot replace every other type of imaging.

Wear clothing that allows easy access to the painful or swollen area. Usually, no fasting or special preparation is needed. Tell the examiner where symptoms start, whether they change with movement, and whether the skin is tender or broken. You may feel pressure from the probe, especially over a sore area; mention discomfort so the examination can be adjusted.

Arrange urgent assessment for a suddenly cold or pale limb, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain after an injury, or new loss of movement, strength, or sensation. Fever with spreading redness or drainage from an injured area also needs prompt medical attention. Ultrasound findings should be interpreted alongside the examination and your symptoms.

Ask what structure is being assessed, whether movement or Doppler imaging will be used, whether another scan is needed, and how the result will affect physiotherapy, medication, or further treatment.
