What is MRI-guided focused ultrasound used for?

MRI provides detailed images of the uterus and helps the treatment team plan the target. Focused ultrasound beams deliver heat to small areas of a fibroid, with MRI helping monitor location and tissue temperature. The aim is to reduce the treated fibroid’s activity and ease symptoms such as heavy bleeding or pressure. Suitability depends on fibroid position, size, number and other pelvic findings.

Your specialist may review imaging, symptoms, fertility plans, previous operations and the location of bowel, nerves and other structures. Ask whether the fibroid can be reached safely, how many treatment sessions may be needed, how symptoms will be followed and what alternatives are available. Tell the team about metal implants, pregnancy possibility or difficulty lying still in an MRI scanner.

After treatment, seek medical advice for severe or increasing pelvic pain, fever, heavy bleeding, fainting, new weakness or skin changes near the treatment area. Sudden breathing difficulty or facial swelling needs emergency care.
