Short answer

MMR vaccination is done with a live attenuated vaccine containing weakened forms of measles, mumps and rubella viruses.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What is in the vaccine

The MMR vaccine contains weakened versions of the viruses that cause measles, mumps and rubella. These forms are designed to stimulate an immune response without causing the usual illnesses in people who can receive the vaccine. The vaccine is given by injection, and the healthcare professional checks the product, patient history and appropriate schedule beforehand.

A live attenuated vaccine is different from a vaccine made only from an inactivated virus or a small protein component. Because of that difference, pregnancy, immune-system conditions and certain medicines should be discussed before vaccination. A previous severe allergic reaction to a vaccine ingredient also needs review.

Preparing for vaccination

Bring your vaccination record if available and tell the vaccinator about pregnancy, immune problems, recent vaccines, serious allergies and medicines that affect immunity. Ask whether you need a catch-up dose or a scheduled follow-up. You can usually continue ordinary activities after the injection unless you feel unwell.

Mild soreness at the injection site, a raised temperature or feeling tired can occur as the immune system responds. Rest, fluids and advice from the vaccinator may help. Use medicine for discomfort only if it is suitable for you and taken according to professional advice.

When to seek care

Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, collapse or severe dizziness after vaccination. Contact a clinician for a high or persistent fever, unusual drowsiness, a seizure, or a reaction that is worsening rather than settling. Tell the clinician when the vaccine was given and describe the symptoms clearly.

Questions for your doctor

Is the MMR vaccine suitable with my health conditions and medicines? Which doses are recorded, and do I need another? What reactions should I expect? When should I seek help, and where should I report a concerning reaction?

No. Suitability depends on factors such as pregnancy, immune-system health, medicines and serious previous allergic reactions, so discuss these before vaccination.
