What is a bone density scan done with?

You lie on a padded table while the scanner passes over parts of your body. The equipment compares how much X-ray energy is absorbed by bone and soft tissue, producing measurements for the areas examined. The scan commonly focuses on the hip and lower spine, although the forearm or another region may be selected for a specific clinical reason.

The examination does not require an injection or a body tunnel. You generally remain still while images are taken, and a technologist may position your legs or arms. The result is interpreted alongside your age, medical history, fracture history and medicines rather than treated as a diagnosis on its own.

Tell the imaging team if you are pregnant or could be pregnant, and mention recent imaging that used contrast material. Wear comfortable clothing without metal fasteners where possible. Follow the centre’s instructions about supplements or medicines, and bring any previous bone-density reports so results can be compared appropriately.

A scan is usually arranged as a planned assessment, not as emergency treatment. Seek urgent help after a fall if you have severe hip or back pain, cannot bear weight, or notice a limb that looks shortened or misaligned. Arrange clinical review for recurring fractures, new loss of height or persistent back pain so the cause can be assessed.
