What happens if pseudogout is not treated?

How the structures involved in Pseudogout differ from normal

Short answer

If pseudogout is not treated, joint inflammation may last longer, pain and swelling can restrict movement, and repeated attacks may contribute to joint damage.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main mechanism
Crystal-triggered inflammation inside a joint
Symptoms needing prompt review
Sudden pain, swelling, warmth and restricted movement

Why prompt assessment matters

Pseudogout, also called calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease, happens when crystals trigger inflammation inside a joint. An attack may cause sudden pain, swelling, warmth and reduced movement, often in a knee, wrist or another large joint. Without treatment, the flare can interfere with walking, hand use or sleep. Repeated inflammation may gradually affect joint tissues and can make an existing arthritis problem more difficult to manage. A Hot, Red, Swollen Joint can also result from infection, which needs different urgent treatment.

What to do during symptoms

Contact a clinician promptly for a new or severe flare so the diagnosis can be checked. Joint Aspiration may remove fluid and help distinguish crystals from infection. Depending on your health and the joint involved, treatment may include Anti-Inflammatory Medication or a Cortisone Injection. Rest the joint briefly, use comfortable support and follow medication instructions; do not self-treat recurrent attacks without review.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical care for fever, chills, feeling very unwell, rapidly increasing redness or swelling, severe pain, or inability to move or bear weight. Urgent assessment is also needed when a swollen joint follows an injury or occurs while you have a weakened immune system.

Questions for your doctor

How can we confirm crystals rather than infection? Which medication is safest with my other conditions? How should I respond to a future flare? Do recurring attacks require monitoring for joint damage?

Questions people ask

Can pseudogout settle without treatment?

Some flares ease, but untreated inflammation can last longer and a hot swollen joint may represent infection, so medical assessment is safer.

Is pseudogout the same as gout?

No. Both involve crystals, but pseudogout is linked to calcium pyrophosphate crystals rather than the crystals associated with gout.
