What happens if ovarian cysts is not treated?

Ovarian cysts differ in their appearance, size, contents and relationship to the menstrual cycle. A functional cyst may disappear as the cycle continues, while a cyst that persists can cause pelvic pain, ovulation pain, pressure, bloating or changes in bleeding. A cyst can sometimes rupture and cause sudden pain; bleeding inside the abdomen is uncommon but needs urgent attention.

Torsion happens when the ovary twists, potentially reducing its blood supply. The risk depends on the cyst and the ovary, so a symptom such as pelvic pain does not show what type of cyst is present. An ultrasound and clinical review help determine the next step.

Keep the imaging appointment or arrange a review if a cyst has been found. Ask what its appearance suggests, whether repeat transvaginal ultrasound is needed, and which symptoms should trigger help. Monitoring may be suitable when findings are reassuring. The combined pill may prevent some new functional cysts but does not remove an existing cyst. Surgery such as laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy is considered selectively.

Seek urgent help for sudden severe one-sided pelvic pain, pain with vomiting, fainting, marked weakness, fever or a swollen abdomen. These symptoms can occur with torsion, rupture or another urgent condition. Arrange a non-urgent review for persistent pelvic pain, increasing abdominal size, persistent bloating, pressure symptoms or unexpected bleeding.

Ask whether the cyst is likely to be functional, what the scan shows, whether it needs follow-up, and how its size or appearance will be checked. Discuss fertility, contraception and the reasons for or against surgery.
