What happens if hallux rigidus is not treated?

Hallux rigidus affects the joint at the base of the big toe. As movement becomes more limited, pushing off during walking, climbing stairs, or running can feel uncomfortable. You may begin rolling onto the outside of the foot or shortening your stride. This altered movement can irritate the forefoot and make foot or toe pain more noticeable. A bump over the joint may also rub against shoes, while the joint can become increasingly difficult to bend. Progression differs between people, and untreated symptoms do not automatically mean surgery is needed.

Arrange an assessment if pain, stiffness, or shoe pressure is affecting your routine. A clinician can examine the joint and discuss options such as roomier footwear, activity changes, exercises, custom orthotics, or a cortisone injection. These measures aim to reduce joint stress and preserve useful movement. If symptoms remain limiting despite non-surgical care, ask whether joint fusion surgery or another procedure fits your joint condition, activity needs, and goals.

Seek prompt medical advice for rapidly increasing pain, marked swelling, redness, warmth, fever, an open sore, or an injury followed by loss of movement. Get urgent help if you cannot safely walk or the toe looks deformed. These features can point to an injury, infection, or another problem that needs assessment rather than simple observation.
