What happens if endometrial polyps is not treated?

Endometrial polyps are growths from the lining of the womb. Some are small and cause no symptoms; others make the lining bleed at unexpected times. Bleeding Between Periods, Breakthrough Bleeding, Heavy Periods and Bleeding After Menopause all warrant assessment rather than being attributed to a polyp without checking.

A polyp may remain, enlarge, or occasionally come away on its own. It can sometimes interfere with the womb environment and make conception more difficult. Most are not cancerous, but tissue removed or sampled can be examined when the pattern of bleeding, age or scan findings makes that appropriate.

Arrange a gynaecology review for repeated irregular bleeding, heavy periods, fertility concerns or any bleeding after menopause. The clinician may recommend ultrasound or Diagnostic Hysteroscopy, which lets them inspect the womb cavity and may allow removal of a visible polyp.

Hysteroscopic Polypectomy removes a polyp through the vagina and cervix without an abdominal incision. Whether observation, sampling or removal is suitable depends on symptoms, scan findings, medical history and pregnancy plans. Ask how tissue will be checked after removal.
