What Happens If Cervical Spondylosis Is Not Treated?

Cervical spondylosis is wear-related change in the bones, discs, and joints of the neck. Some people remain stable with mild symptoms. In others, narrowing around a nerve can lead to cervical radiculopathy, with pain, tingling, or altered feeling into an arm. Narrowing around the spinal cord can lead to cervical myelopathy. This may affect hand coordination, walking balance, or strength. Symptoms can gradually interfere with sleep, driving, desk work, and ordinary movements.

Arrange a clinical assessment if symptoms continue, recur, or limit your activities. A clinician may check neck movement, reflexes, sensation, strength, and coordination before deciding whether imaging is useful. Treatment can include activity adjustments, targeted physiotherapy, pain relief, or an injection for selected joint pain. Persistent nerve or cord compression may need a spine specialist’s opinion; procedures such as cervical fusion are considered only after examination and discussion.

Seek urgent medical help for new or worsening weakness, clumsy hands, difficulty walking, loss of balance, or problems controlling bladder or bowel function. Sudden severe neck pain after an injury, or numbness affecting a large area, also needs prompt assessment. These signs can reflect pressure on the spinal cord or another condition requiring rapid evaluation.
