What happens if brain tumour is not treated?

Brain tumours behave differently. Some grow slowly, while others change more quickly. Effects depend on tumour type, location, size, and whether it blocks fluid flow or irritates nearby brain tissue. Possible symptoms include persistent headache, vomiting, seizures, weakness, altered sensation, difficulty walking, vision changes, speech problems, memory changes, or shifts in mood and behaviour. A symptom such as a persistent headache can have many causes; it does not by itself identify a brain tumour.

Arrange medical review for new or changing neurological symptoms. An MRI scan can show the tumour's position and relationship to nearby structures. Depending on the findings, care may involve observation with planned scans, surgery, radiotherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, chemotherapy, or a combination. The choice depends on the tumour's features, symptoms, general health, and treatment goals. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice.

Call emergency services for a first-time seizure, a seizure lasting longer than expected, sudden one-sided weakness, new speech difficulty, severe drowsiness, repeated vomiting, or a sudden severe headache. Seek prompt assessment for a persistent headache that is new or worsening, especially with visual, balance, or cognitive changes.

Ask what type of tumour is suspected, what the MRI shows, whether pressure or fluid blockage is present, and what could happen if assessment is delayed. Ask which treatment aims to control the tumour and which treatments focus on symptoms or function.
