What happens if adenomyosis is not treated?

Adenomyosis occurs when tissue similar to the womb lining grows into the muscular wall of the uterus. The uterus may become enlarged and tender. Some people have mild or no symptoms, while others develop progressively disruptive bleeding, cramping or pelvic pain.

Heavy periods can leave you tired, breathless on exertion or light-headed when iron stores fall. Pain may affect sleep, work, sex or exercise. Symptoms can also overlap with other causes of pelvic pain, so a change in bleeding or pain deserves assessment rather than an assumption that adenomyosis is the only explanation.

Arrange a gynaecology review if symptoms are affecting daily life, recurring, or causing fatigue. Keep a record of bleeding, pain, clots, medicines and cycle timing. Assessment may include an examination, blood tests for anaemia and imaging.

Treatment is chosen around your symptoms, future pregnancy plans and other health factors. Options may include a Hormonal Coil, Tranexamic Acid for Heavy Bleeding, or procedures such as Uterine Artery Embolisation or Endometrial Ablation. Discuss benefits, limitations and fertility implications before choosing a procedure.

Seek urgent medical help for bleeding that is very heavy or does not settle, fainting, severe dizziness, chest pain, shortness of breath at rest, or sudden severe pelvic pain. These symptoms can signal significant blood loss or another urgent pelvic problem.
