What happens after colposcopy?

Colposcopy gives a closer view of the cervix after an abnormal screening result or an HPV finding. The clinician may take a small biopsy, and the laboratory examines it for cell changes. The result may support routine monitoring, another follow-up examination, or treatment to remove affected tissue. An abnormal screening result or biopsy is not the same as a cancer diagnosis.

Use a sanitary pad if you have spotting or watery discharge, and follow the clinic's instructions about intercourse, tampons, swimming, and strenuous activity while the cervix heals. Keep the appointment or communication date for your results. If treatment is recommended, ask how it affects future pregnancy plans and whether a cone biopsy or loop excision is appropriate.

Contact the clinic if bleeding becomes heavier than your usual period, discharge develops a strong unpleasant smell, or pain is increasing rather than settling. Seek urgent care for severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fever, dizziness, or fainting.

Ask: Was a biopsy taken? When will the result arrive? What did the examination show? When can I resume normal activities? If treatment is needed, what are the options and follow-up arrangements?
