What do whiteheads feel like with milia?

Most people with Milia notice whiteheads as tiny, firm, pearly bumps that feel smooth and are usually not painful. They sit just beneath the surface and can feel like hard little grains when touched. The skin around them is often not red, swollen, or itchy, although rubbing the area can make it irritated.

Whiteheads is a common presentation of Milia. Milia are small cysts containing trapped keratin beneath the outer skin layer, rather than the oil-filled blocked follicles typical of acne. They often occur around the eyelids, cheeks, nose, or forehead and may remain unchanged for a while.

Because milia and whiteheads can look alike, colour and texture alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. A bump that is red, painful, spreading, bleeding, or changing shape has a different pattern and should not be treated by repeated squeezing.

Wash the area gently and use a simple moisturiser if the surrounding skin is dry. Avoid needles, pins, squeezing, and harsh exfoliation, particularly near the eyes; these can injure skin and introduce infection. Review heavy creams, occlusive products, or recent irritation with a clinician if the bumps appeared after a change in routine. A trained professional can remove a persistent milia safely when removal is appropriate.

Arrange an assessment if a firm pale bump persists, multiplies, obstructs vision, or you are unsure whether it is milia.
