What does pale skin feel like with thalassaemia?

Pallor is often noticed in the face, lips, inside the eyelids, or palms rather than felt as pain, itching, or numbness. Some people describe looking washed out while their skin feels normal to touch. Thalassaemia can also be associated with tiredness, reduced stamina, dizziness, or breathlessness because the blood may carry less oxygen. The appearance can be easier to notice during illness or after exertion.

Pale skin has several possible explanations, including normal variation, temporary illness, or other causes of anaemia. Its appearance alone cannot identify thalassaemia.

Arrange a medical assessment if pallor is new, persistent, or accompanied by tiredness, breathlessness, dizziness, or a racing heartbeat. A clinician may ask about family history and arrange blood tests to check red blood cells and haemoglobin. Do not start iron supplements unless testing shows that iron is needed, because thalassaemia and iron deficiency are different problems.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, confusion, blue lips, or a rapidly worsening condition. If pallor appears with heavy bleeding, marked weakness, or a very fast heartbeat, seek prompt medical care.
