What does metformin for PCOS treat?

Metformin helps the body respond more effectively to insulin and reduces the amount of glucose made by the liver. In PCOS, that metabolic effect may support more regular ovulation and periods for some people. It may be considered when irregular cycles, anovulation, or metabolic concerns are part of the clinical picture.

Metformin does not remove every feature of PCOS. It is not a direct treatment for unwanted hair, acne, or every fertility need, and it is not a substitute for checking other causes of irregular bleeding. The right goal depends on whether pregnancy is desired, how cycles behave, and your general health.

Take metformin exactly as prescribed, often with food to reduce stomach upset. Nausea, loose stools, abdominal discomfort, and reduced appetite can occur, particularly when treatment begins or the dose changes.
