What does generalised weakness feel like with dehydration?

The body may feel heavy, washed out or unsteady. Standing up can bring light-headedness, and heat or exertion may make the weakness more noticeable. You may have a dry mouth, headache, darker urine, or pass urine less often. Vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, sweating and not drinking enough can all reduce body fluid.

Dehydration can affect concentration and circulation as fluid loss progresses. Weakness may improve after drinking, but ongoing losses can outpace what you replace. The symptoms overlap with other illnesses, so a clinician may need to assess the cause rather than assuming fluid loss is the explanation.

Rest somewhere cool and take frequent small sips of water. If vomiting or diarrhoea is present, ask a pharmacist or clinician about an oral rehydration solution. Continue monitoring urine colour and frequency, thirst, dizziness and your ability to keep fluids down. Avoid alcohol while recovering, and seek advice if you have a condition that limits how much fluid you should drink.

Get urgent help if you faint, become confused, cannot keep fluids down, are very drowsy, have severe dizziness, or produce little or no urine. Rapid breathing, a fast heartbeat, or weakness after significant heat exposure also warrants urgent assessment. Children, older adults and people who are pregnant may become unwell more quickly.

Ask what may have caused the fluid loss, how much and what type of fluid is suitable, and whether medicines or another illness could be contributing. Tell the clinician how long symptoms have lasted and whether vomiting, diarrhoea, fever or heat preceded them.
