What does eye discharge feel like with a stye?

Most people with Stye notice eye discharge as sticky, gritty, or crusty material around the eyelid, especially after sleep. The eyelid may feel tender, swollen, or irritated at the same time.

Eye Discharge is a common presentation of Stye. A stye is an inflamed, blocked eyelid gland, so discharge may collect near the lashes or at the inner eyelid. It can feel tacky when you blink and may make the eyelids stick together. Mild redness near one tender spot fits a stye, although discharge can also occur with other eye problems.

Wash your hands before touching the eye. Hold a clean, comfortably warm cloth over the closed eyelid for several minutes, then gently wipe away softened crusting with clean water. Do not squeeze or pierce the lump, share towels, or wear eye makeup or contact lenses while the eye is irritated.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if pain is severe, vision changes, light hurts the eye, swelling spreads around the eye, or the eye itself becomes very red. Seek urgent help for fever with rapidly worsening eyelid swelling, or if an injury or chemical entered the eye.

Ask whether the discharge and lump match a stye, whether you should pause contact lenses, and what changes would mean the infection is spreading. Mention how long the discharge has lasted and whether vision is affected.
