What does dizziness feel like with heat exhaustion?

Heat exhaustion develops when the body struggles to cool itself, often after sweating in hot or humid conditions. Loss of fluid and salt can reduce circulation and leave you feeling faint, especially when you stand up. You may also have a headache, nausea, heavy sweating, clammy skin, thirst, tiredness or muscle cramps. The sensation is often more like feeling faint or off-balance than the room spinning.

Move away from heat and notice whether the feeling settles with cooling and fluids. Dizziness can have many causes, so a new or severe episode should not be labelled as heat exhaustion without considering the wider picture.

Stop activity, sit or lie in a cool place, loosen extra clothing and cool your skin with wet cloths or a fan. Sip water or an oral rehydration drink if you are awake and able to swallow. Do not return to exertion while dizzy, and have someone stay nearby if you feel faint. If symptoms do not improve after cooling and drinking, arrange urgent medical advice.

Get emergency help for confusion, collapse, a seizure, difficulty staying awake, trouble breathing, chest pain, severe headache, or skin that is very hot with worsening symptoms. Do not give drinks to someone who is confused, unconscious or unable to swallow. Persistent vomiting, worsening weakness or dizziness after cooling also needs prompt assessment.

Ask what may have triggered the episode, whether your medicines or another illness could contribute, how to replace fluids safely, and when it is reasonable to resume exercise or outdoor work.
