What does cough feel like with sinusitis?

Cough is a common presentation of Sinusitis, often caused by mucus draining into the throat and worse when lying down. It may feel like frequent throat clearing or an irritating tickle rather than a deep chest cough. A blocked nose, facial pressure, reduced sense of smell, thick nasal discharge, or a sore throat can appear at the same time.

Inflamed sinus lining can produce mucus that moves down the back of the throat, irritating the cough reflex. This postnasal drainage may be more noticeable overnight or after waking. Cough can also follow a cold, allergies, asthma, or reflux, so the location of discomfort and other symptoms help a clinician work out the likely cause.

Drink fluids, rest, and consider saline nasal rinsing or spray if it is suitable for you and used as directed. Avoid cigarette smoke and other irritants. A pharmacist can discuss pain relief or nasal treatments that fit your health history. Seek advice if symptoms are severe, keep returning, or are not settling as expected.

Get urgent medical help for swelling around an eye, vision changes, severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, or difficulty breathing. Arrange prompt assessment for high fever, severe one-sided facial pain, worsening symptoms after initial improvement, or a cough with chest pain or breathlessness. Children with marked swelling or unusual drowsiness need urgent review.

Ask whether postnasal drainage explains the cough, whether allergies or asthma may contribute, and which nasal treatments are safe for you. Explain whether the cough is worse at night, whether you have facial pain or fever, and how long nasal symptoms have been present.
